Last Thursday I went to Tesco Opticians in Hampton, Peterborough, part of the Serpentine Green shopping complex. A friend had told me that they were the best opticians in Peterborough in terms of price and service. I was dubious, to be honest, as I am used to having to pay more for great service. My eyesight has been deteriorating recently and I have accepted that I may need to wear glasses all the time!

I arrived at the store in plenty of time for my appointment and was greeted professionally. The optician was very friendly and efficient and told me exactly what she was doing throughout my eye test. Then I had some additional tests and the young lady who took care of that was equally efficient and reassuring.

The next part was choosing my frames, and another young lady helped me with that, with patience and understanding, and absolutely no hard sell. I left the store feeling that I had had an excellent experience. Oh, and the price wasn’t too eye-watering either. All boxes ticked!

I thanked all the staff for their help and congratulated them on their customer service skills. That brought a smile to their faces! Yesterday I went on to the Tesco website and sent an email to thank them and to make sure their manager knew what a great team they have in the opticians in Peterborough! To my great surprise, ten minutes after I sent the email, I had a phone call from Tesco, thanking me for my feedback and promising that it would be passed on to the store. Wow. Now that exceeded my expectations. It just goes to show that it is possible for a huge business like Tesco to have a ‘human face’.

I’ll write again after I have collected my glasses and see if the staff did get recognised by their manager!
